Costume jewelry are every female’s favorite playmates but have you ever wondered when did it actually originate and how did it become so popular among masses? If not then here’s a brief history of costume jewelry’s emergence and popularism.

The costume jewelry first started in the 1700s when cheap glass jewelries were made. It was then swapped almost after a century, with jewelries made up of semi precious stones and materials. The use of inexpensive materials made these jewelries find their niche amongst the commoners. People liked it for its affordability and as an alternate option for the expensive authentic jewelries.

Though costume jewelry had entered the market in 1700 but the golden period for these jewelries started only past the early twentieth century. It was the period when a new section called the “learned middle class” was emerging in the society. The people who belonged to this category were learned professionals like teachers, doctors etc. Females belonging to this category demanded for beautiful but affordable jewelry which was duly met in the dawn of machine-age and industrial revolution. Machine made replicas of much admired heirloom pieces went onto become a huge hit among the masses.

Costume jewelry was further made popular by designers like Corocraft, Monet, Dior, Chanel etc. Another significant factor in popularizing the imitation jewelry back then, were the Hollywood movies. The leading ladies of the film fraternity during 1940s and 50s often endorsed the designer jewelry pieces which they wore in their movies. The format was simple- if you liked a necklace carried by Bette Davis in The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, then you can buy a copy of the same from Joseff, the original designer of the piece. Stars like Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Russell endorsed the designer pieces in advertisements which were later supplied to stores like Woolsworths, making the revered pieces accessible to the ordinary women.

Costume jewelry has indeed come a long way, with people associating the high-end fashion accessories to ‘collectible’ status today and its a fact that jewelry trends might come and go, but one thing which would stay constantly on the fashion front is the craze for costume jewelry.
